Is there a maximum station size that players are allowed to build to?

some players believe 2x20 is acceptable others don't

2 Maximum Train Size

are players limited to the length of train they can build??

since the max train size for srv 3 is 7 tiles it stands to reason that the max stn size should be 7 but this is not written any where?

The rule is actually very well worded and allows flexibility on this:

Don't build stations or station parts that serve the sole purpose of increasing the coverage area, sabotaging other players, increasing the station/town rating or decreasing the distance to another station.

(meaning that sometimes a 20 tile station would be cheating, other times it would be ok.)

The train length is set by us (20 tiles max on long /short goal, 7 tiles on quick goals)

A good rule of thumb is that "your trains lenght need to match the station" - correct?

Which is the way I see it too. However each of the BTPro servers have different settings:

Ten	7 Tiles	20 Tiles

Since only one train can enter 1 platform at a time it makes sense that servers 3,6,7 and 10 should have there max station size reduced to 7 tiles. Since the only possible reasons for having a station this size on one of these servers is to block or create station spread.

Yeps, I think that this evening I will try to change the settings so that the Max Train Length will match the Max Station Size. The only problem is that IF we want to change these settings the servers need to be brought down COMPLETELY... So overall players don't like that so much

I don't think the settings need to change. The current rule and settings work very well. Players know the rule, follow the rule and it is enforced by the fantastic admins.
Also there are other reasons that a station would need to be 'oversize'. For example, a transfer or factory station with 4 loading and 6 unloading platforms = 10. This is quite common practice.
