Silly Sad, my Linux knowledge is limited (very), but the patch can be applied/compiled in nix OS's following this steps:
- download the diff file here ;
- download OpenTTD source code - in a console window type svn checkout svn://svn.openttd.org/tags/1.4.4;
- apply the diff file to source downloaded (instructions here );
- Compile it (instructions here );

Note: remember to follow instructions in the last link because of libraries/dependencies needed

Hope it helps and as I said, Linux is a strange ground for me ^^

oh, thanx, man!
i have already compiled it following an outdated instruction i found on the forum.
it took some investigation, but at least the instruction has answered dependency question completely.

i beg you to publish your instruction on the download page:
"windows -> download here; linux -> read here, how to compile"
make it appear the same rank alternatives, for the download page now creates strong impression that there is no alternative to the windows version.

this simple textual make-up will make your program widely available for linux users.

also the link to the diff file (however IS enough for an experienced user) does not give a newcomer any idea what does this diff represent? a diff between what?

just say few words, like: the client is completely represented by the following diff between original and btpro versions; this diff is relative to the root of the source tree. -- something like this.

cheers.
