gameplay problem please look.. 12 years 10 months ago #76

notice the elegantly placed train station in the middle of the city and the bus stations with the only purpose of extending the stations range... im so sick of this and it made me stop playing because EVERYONE is doing it at the start and i didnt want to start doing it myself aswell so my only option was to stop playing... just because it is so extremely effective starter you cant win without it isnt there a solution for this..? im guessing the only way this problem can be solved is by the developers releasing a patch that prevents this 'cheat'.. :(

Hey Barg,

Thanks for letting us know... I've checked what we can do about it... There is a setting in the settingsfile of openttd which is:

adjacent_stations = true

I've looked it up on the internet where it says:

Holding the Ctrl key while building a station directly adjacent to another one will create new station instead of merging the new tile(s) with the existing station.
Possible Settings: On or Off In Openttd.cfg config file:
([station] adjacent_stations = <true|false>)

Well, right now its on true on our servers, so maybe we have to change this to false! Then it will not be possible anymore to use the CTRL key in the game to create stations far away... But to do this I need to shut down the servers!

I will check when I can do this... I think tomorrow ;-) Will start with server1 for the test :-P

Thanks for letting us know ;-)

Regards,

Frank

First of all this doesn't help so much that it allows them to have a double advantage, you probably just played a bit less good than them. Anyway you just have to use !admin than or point to them that it isn't allowed.

of course i did that, but by banning everyone that does it (some do it not knowing it is forbidden, you dont solve the problem.

Hey guys, thought I would touch on this, even though its several months later. I have personally been playing this game since original Transport Tycoon was released. Been keeping up on OpenTTD for years now. I have seen this done many times.

That server setting for adjacent stations means if you hold Ctrl it creates a new (seperate) station, adjacent to the other, meaning two stations touching with different catchment/delivery locations. As many have figured out, if your building a train station, you can hit 'R' or click the bulldozer to remove tiles, the same works with bus stations. Since most towns aren't particularly on slopes, you can easily drop on-road stations around corners and eventually smother the town. This is just flat out abuse.

I have been using Bus stations to transfer to nearby train stations for town coverage a long time now, and it has no way hindered others use of the town. Since a simple singular bus station covers a 7x7 area, there is no need for any more then that. Sometimes I do double up stations (in heavy cities way overgrown), in which case they are distributed on average every 7x8 areas, typically, only need 4 of these in major cities to cover the entire thing.

Essentially what I'm getting at, that even with a 2 tile wide bus system in a city, you only need 2 tiles out of every 56. Anything more is just waste and competitor hindrance.
