My thoughts:

@1: Server speed/performance is enough to handle such game. I'm sure server admins can confirm it. The problem is in openttd client (the game on your computer side), which processes all vehicles and buildings in single thread. Until the game is not reimplemented to use efficiently more threads, the only way to play in such extreme conditions is to have highest frequency cpu in single-thread tasks. I was able to play up to the very end (with 5 GHz cpu).

@2: Competing single players with two player companies is balanced in scoring system: when the company has two playes, both of them receive half of points. Should playing in pairs be forbidden? I don't know.
