what you do is build a train station on the mainland, and connect a dock to it in the same way you would a bus stop. Then you build a ship to pickup oil from the oil rig and put the "Transfer and leave empty" order on. So when it gets to the station dock it unloads all that oil for your trains to carry across the map to an oil refinery.

I dont seem to have a 'transfer and leave empty' option.
Is there a patch I am missing?

I think it's just a "Transfer" option... not "Transfer and leave empty"... Try to find that in the orders window...

The thing you select is called "Transfer" When you add it to the station it is called "transfer and leave empty" means they don't start picking up stuff they just dropped off if there is no receiving train in the station
