In your first post you described which hotkeys work and which don't - looks like all combinations are fine, it's just the single keys that aren't working. I'm thinking - maybe you are having some keyboard problem? Like maybe ALT or CTRL are constantly pressed? It's unlikely because you would probably notice something is wrong with those by typing anything anywhere. Maybe the SHIFT key is stuck but it's countered with CAPS LOCK, then maybe you wouldn't notice anything.

Get a key logger and see what is being pressed exactly.

well, I'll make the solution even simplier:
- I only test Linux versions in VM's;
- After download svn source, and apply the necessary diff files,
- ./configure
- next step, because I dnt like linux's maniac relocations,
- make bundle
(at bold what to be typed in console)
...
after compilation complete, there's a new "bundle" folder where you started the compilation
- create an empty file there called "openttd.cfg"
- run the openttd binary there

will require download the graphics and so on, but works like a sharm. And there's an independent game folder to use as you want ;)

simple, right?

The xev program - but honestly no idea what these ciphers mean. But I think there's no problem with my keyboard.

this is how I made it couple of times. It always used to work. But now - for some strange reason - not any more.

Interesting: works normally in Gnome and Unity, doesn't work in Xfce only..
