I don't know if it would be possible to change, but the really small letters means quite a problem (especially in FIRS) when you want to choose what type of industry the map will show (oil wells, or coal mines, etc).

there's some settings in openttd.cfg file that you can play around:
small_font = 
medium_font = 
large_font = 
mono_font = 
small_size = 
medium_size = 
large_size = 
mono_size = 
small_aa = 
medium_aa = 
large_aa = 
mono_aa =

I strongly recommend to don't use Times New Roman .

Though I was wrong, with bigger letter size the map takes up way too much space, so I guess it's alright the way it is :D
